Pink Hall School.

Echols Lower Grades 1936 & 1937.

Echols Public School System in the early part of the twentieth century was also called Pink Hall. Nice looking bunch of younger grade school students. Pictures supplied from the Burden Collection. Enhancing of the old pictures was done by Dale Thomas. Thanks Dale. These old pictures did not have the students identified and help was needed in this area. Mrs. L. B. Taylor, Mrs. Hildred Fulkerson and Mrs. Dick Thomas worked on that project and supplied a name for each student. Thanks to the three Burden sisters for their help.

This particular class is considered to be the 1936 and 1937 Lower Grades of the Echols School. It was composed of students that would now be considered first, second and third grades. In the older "One Room Schools", the students were taught together. A lot of these one room schools had two rooms, with one room being considered a library. If two teachers were available the upper grades and the lower grades could be separated and taught as two different groups. If only one teacher was available, all of the students were taught as in one large classroom.

The teacher for this class was Mrs. C. O. Brown. She and her husband were the teachers for this school year and he taught the "Upper Grades". It does not sound like it would be the best of ways to teach children, but it must have worked as the graduates went on to become solid citizens. After graduation, some went on to high school and then on to become miners, teachers, doctors, lawyers and such, just like in today school system.
