The 1948-1949 Basketball Team.

Well, for starters, this team was different in more ways than one. To start with, James E. Curtis became the head basketball coach. James Eddie graduated from Rockport in 1946 and attended, at that time, Western Kentucky Teachers College. He was working on a degree in Elementary Education and was offered a teaching job and the head coach job at Rockport. Mr. Park left, for a superintendent position in Tennessee, after the 1948 school year, and James Eddie saw a chance to see if he wanted a teaching and/or a coaching career. After this first year of coaching and teaching, James moved on to another career.

As far back as I can remember, the basketball teams had uniforms that were "Wool Like" and for the most part, gold with purple trim. And were the basketball uniform shorts short! Basketball was certainly in the evolving stage, but it would be several years before the ugly, down past your knees, uniforms in use today would become the norm. This team had purple uniforms, trimmed in white and made of the new "Nylon Type" material. This uniform would not last, as the next year, the uniforms were back to a white top and purple shorts, but with an addition. The 1950 team had Gold warm-up jackets that were made of the "Nylon Type" material. Oh well, all of the teams were on an equal basis to the other teams in the area, not only in playing skills, but outfitted with a basketball uniform that was up to par with the standard of the era. Go Tigers. Hope you enjoyed the page.
