Ten Ken Miners Receive 25 Year Safe Worker Awards.

Newspaper Article From Ed Whitehead Collection.

On June 15, 1978 Peabody presented its' first, local, 25 Year Safety Awards. Ten Ken Mine miners had worked, at least 25 Years without a "Lost Time Injury."

Seniority List From Ed Whitehead Collection.

On October 26, 1966, the Peabody Coal Company, Ken Mine, union seniority list was composed of about 110 miners. Of this list, several of the miners had become bosses and company employees, some transferred, some were disabled and a few no longer worked for Ken Mine. Six of the miners on this list were charter members and signed up for union membership on November 25, 1946. Those six included J. E. Blair, F. C. McClain, E. Whitehead, R. E. Denney, C. Watkins, and H. P. Ashton. R. Chinn, and H. C. Boyd signed a few days later and before the year of 1946 had ended. In 1946, in 1947, and in 1948, union membership was increasing at a rate of about one union miner a week. Things slowed in 1949 and continued at a slow pace until 1965. By 1966, and the last year for this list, C. Taylor was the only miner added to the seniority list.

That seniority list was composed of a lot of good men and miners. There would not be any problem of starting a company and operating with the men mentioned. How many can you pick out that you know? I would guess, without actually counting, that I knew about a third of the union miners and most of that list would be composed of men that I knew very well. A quick scan would lead me to believe that, at one time, a third of the men lived in Echols or Rockport.

The original list that I copied from was provided by Mrs. Ed Whitehead and would like to thank her for being so generous with her material and her time. The original list is almost fifty years old and showing signs of wear. There are some names that I can not make out. If any of you are aware of a list that is in better shape or know the names of those that are not legible, feel free to contact me and I will update this page. Also, I am always updating the "Coal Mining" pages and would appreciate other pictures and information about any of the local coal mines. Feel free to use the link below to contact me.
