Jeremy Lile
Jeremy Lile was born and raised in Echols and is the son of J. G. and Natalie
Lile. Jeremy was able to complete his formal education at Western Elementary and
Ohio County High School. After high school Jeremy enlisted in the U. S. Army and
served his country for three years. He received an honorable discharge in 1995
and returned to Ohio Country. Presently, he is employed as a truck driver.
Jeremy enlisted in the Army in 1992 and was sent to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After
completing basic training, he was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina and trained
to become an infantryman. After advanced infantry training at Fort Lewis,
Washington, he was sent to Camp Humphreys in Korea. In 1993, there was some
trouble in Somalia and Jeremy Lile was sent there with a support group of the
5th Special Forces Group. After the problems in Somalia were contained, Jeremy
was returned to the states and given his discharge.
For those of you that have forgotten about the "Hotbed" in Somalia in 1992, the
following is a short summary. Africa's was having a bad drought in 1992, and a
Civil War in the same time frame. These conditions plunged Somalia into a severe
famine that caused the death of some 300,000 natives. U.S. troops were sent in to
protect the delivery of food in Dec. 1992, and in May 1993 the UN took control of
the relief efforts from the U.S. The warlord Mohamed Farah Aidid ambushed UN troops
and dragged American bodies through the streets, causing an about-face in U.S.
willingness to involve itself in the fate of this lawless country. The last of the
U.S. troops departed in late March, leaving 19,000 UN troops behind. Jeremy played
a part in trying to help the Somalia people.
Thanks Jeremy, for your service to our country.
