Rockport High School 1947
Pictured above is the junior class picture in 1947 of the Rockport High School graduating
class of 1948. There were nine graduates in 1948; George Akins, Hugh D. Bailey jr.,
James R. Barnard, Ruth Harper Benton, Freeman Jones, Audrey Maddox, Betty Jean Maddox,
Phillip Maple, and Lorene Robinson. Most of the male graduates of this class either
joined the armed services or was drafted. Most of the females started working and making
the area a better place to live.
In the year of 1948, Harry Truman was President of the USA and integrated the U.S.
Armed Forces. World Health Organization was formed by the United Nations. "Citation"
wins Preakness, Belmont and Kentucky Derby. Boxer Joe Louis retires. Popcorn sold
on a mass scale for the first time. "Scrabble" introduced. Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne,
and, Olivia Newton-John were born.
That was what it was like in 1948, almost a century ago. Hope you enjoyed the class
