Rockport High School Class Of 1927.
The year of 1927 was mostly a peaceful and tranquil time for the
world and especially the United States. Oh, there were a few conflicts and soldier
always seem to be pitted against each other. A few battle zones existed and this
was mostly the British protecting their empire. Natural disasters took their toil
and events, discoveries, and people made the news.
In the United States, the 1927 Great Mississippi Flood, affected 700,000 people in
the greatest national disaster in US history. The flood lasted for about three weeks,
starting in the latter part of April and continued through the first part of May. A
few weeks later, Charles Lindbergh made his historic First solo, non-stop Trans-Atlantic
flight from New York to Paris. Later, in his honor, he would receive a "Ticker Tape"
parade in New York City. In December, after 19 years of Ford Model T production, Ford
Motor Company unveiled the Ford Model A as its' new automobile. The musical play
"Showboat", based on Edna Ferber's novel, opened on Broadway and goes on to become
the first great plays of the American Musical Theatre. In 1927 the World Population
reached 2 billion and three young adults graduated from Rockport High School.
Ercell Chinn, Annetta Mae Reid, and Waggoner Williams, earned their High School Diplomas
at the end of the school year and made history as being in the second class to graduate
from Rockport High School.
Ercell P. Chinn was the son of Elijah P. and Sara G. Chinn and the brother of
Jesse Chinn. He was born in Echols in 1908 and died in Louisville in 1997. The Chinn
family was a very large family as Elijah was married several times. Ercell married
Monetta Myers and they spent their married lives in Louisville. There were no children.
I remember a Chinn that we called "Ercie Lee". He was quite a basketball fan and
attended most of Rockport Basketball games. I don't know if it is the same person or
not. The time frame is correct.
Annetta Mae Reid was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Reid. After graduation, she
taught school at Rockport for a short period of time. Guess enough time to know that
she did not want to be a teacher. She married Andy Howerton from Central City. Andy
worked for the Railroad. He was transferred to Memphis where they lived the rest of
their life. Annetta worked at several jobs there until she went to work for S and H
Green Stamps, she worked there as store manager until she retired. She had two daughters.

Annetta Mae Reid
Waggoner Williams was a graduate that I do not know and I do not have any information
about. . Again, I have added a Web Page to the Rockport/Echols
Site and do not have all of the information to complete the page. I prefer to have
something or a start than nothing. I will keep the page under construction and will
add to the page if and when information becomes available. Thanks for looking and
would appreciate any info that you can share.
