Another fine bunch of Echols students. I don't know much about this fine old school, but do know that it was
attended by a large group of students, over a period of some twenty-five years. The operational time frame was probably
from the early twenties to the mid forties. I think that the "Pink Hall" Reunion is still being held, but the
attendance now is not very high in comparison to a few years earlier.
This school was a typical type "One Room" school that all of us have heard about. Except, this school had two rooms. It
is my understanding that there was one large room and a small room. The small room was for a library. The teacher had
other duties other than teaching. In the winter, the school was heated by a coal stove and guess who kept the stove
stoked. In the summer, and you have to be joking if you think there was any other form of air conditioning, other than
a breeze blowing through a few open windows. There was no electricity and no running water. A large bucket with a
dipper was the only source of water. The teacher was able to keep the students under control because he/she was in
charge. Things were different then.
See you..... jrd
Pictures supplied
from the Burden Collection. Enhancing of the old pictures was done by Dale Thomas. Thanks Dale. These old pictures
did not have the students identified and help was needed in this area. Mrs. L. B. Taylor, Mrs. Hildred Fulkerson and
Mrs. Dick Thomas worked on that project and supplied a name for each student. Thanks to the three Burden sisters for
their help.
