Rockport Basketball!

It has been years since I have seen this picture of the 1947-48 Basketball Team. I can remember this bunch of basketball players and this team. When I saw this picture for the first time in fifty years or so, I thought to myself; Wow, this was some basketball team. No high school team should be able to beat this team. From the late forties until the mid fifties, I can remember most of the players and most of the teams. I played on a few of those teams and competed against many more either in the off season or after graduation. I guess that most of the teams stick out in my mind as being mostly undefeated. I don't remember losing very many games and I don't guess most of the other players, the fans nor the cheerleaders remember losing very often. The 1954 team that lost to Dundee in the first game of the district tournament may be the loss that I remember most. Beaver Dam and Hartford always seem to have good teams and they were hard to beat. Dundee, Fordsville, Cromwell and Centertown were teams with the school enrollment much like Rockport and it seems that we beat them more often than they beat us. Hum, McHenry is not included in this list. Well, tell you why. McHenry always was a tough team to beat.

Well, I started off talking about this particular 1947-1948 basketball team. In my mind, this particular team was hard to beat. I would have guessed four losses, five at most. What do you think? They played 20 regular season games in 1947-1948. Give me an idea as to what you think the won-loss record was. This team had size, speed and shooting ability. The back row, was in all probability, the starters. The sad news is that this 47-48 team lost more games than it won. McHenry, Rochester, Hughes-Kirk and Beaver Dam were much better. Can you imagine. Moral of this story is to stay away from some record books and old historic records. A person's memory tends to remember the "Good Times" and forget the "Bad Times". I have learned my lesson. I will keep the memory that I have etched in my brain and remember that most of the Rockport High School Basketball Teams were mostly undefeated and will stay away from actual facts.

Now, look at the Second Team. Nice looking bunch of guys, but not very impressive looking as to being able to beat other basketball teams. Well, I am telling you to be careful as to your thoughts, because this team did not look back on any team that they played. The won loss record was 12 wins to 8 losses. The teams that beat this Rockport team did not escape unscathed as no team except Beaver Dam had a two and zero record against them in the school year of 1947-1948. May all continue to be Rockport Tigers.
